Responsible AI in Genealogy

AI should help you research faster — it shouldn't replace your judgment, or your sources. Here's how that principle shapes GTF, concretely.

Our approach is guided by the Coalition for Responsible AI in Genealogy (CRAIGEN) — an initiative endorsed by the National Genealogical Society and prominent voices in the genealogy community. We're not a member organization or certified by CRAIGEN; we simply design around their five principles, and this page explains how.

Accuracy

Verify AI-generated content against other records; acknowledge credible sources.

Every AI extraction goes through a review inbox before it touches your tree — nothing is applied automatically. Suggestions carry a confidence score, and low-confidence extractions are flagged for a closer look.

Disclosure

Disclose when AI materially influences the creation or modification of content.

AI-generated biographies are labeled as AI-generated, not presented as your own writing. Document review clearly separates AI-extracted data from what you entered yourself.

Privacy

Take reasonable measures to safeguard private information when using AI.

All AI processing runs through AWS Bedrock inside our own infrastructure — your family's data is never sent to a third-party LLM provider like ChatGPT. Living persons get additional privacy protections by default.

Education

Understand what AI can and can't do, so you can use it well.

We say what the AI is actually good at, not just what sounds good in marketing copy — including where accuracy depends on things like scan quality, not just document type or era.

Compliance

Respect IP, licensing, and data-privacy regulations around AI use.

Source attribution is mandatory when importing external record data, and licensing is tracked alongside any contributed content.

Photo Integrity

AI photo tools can fabricate details — originals shouldn't be at risk.

We never alter your original image. Enhanced or colorized versions are always saved as separate, clearly labeled copies — the original stays untouched and accessible.

How We Talk to You

Language matters. AI suggestions are starting points for your research, not conclusions — so that's how we phrase them.

"Your ancestor was born in Cork in 1847."
"This document suggests a birthplace of Cork, circa 1847 — worth verifying against the original record."

See It In Practice

Upload a document and watch the review-before-accept workflow yourself.
